The Well Fancied Runners

Between 1990 and 2009 there were four 7/1 winners of the Grand National and they all went off as favourites or joint favourites. They were the four shortest priced winners of the Grand National during that period. The biggest priced winner was Mon Mome in 2009 who went off a whopping 100/1.

The Slightly Fancied Runners

In eleven of the nineteen runnings above the winner was priced between 10/1 and 20/1 inclusive. This is a massive indicator of what sort of SP the Grand National winner is likely to have. Only four winners started at single figure odds and they all went off as favourite and there were four winners above 20/1 who went off at 33/1, 33/1, 40/1 and 100/1.

Effect Of The Going On Grand National Winner Odds

The going doesn't seem to have a massive impact on the SP of the Grand National winner. Although Red Marauder, a 33/1 shot won on heavy ground, Earth Summit, the 7/1 favourite managed to win on soft ground. Favourites have won the race recently on soft, good to soft and good ground.
