His choice of mount will usually be known a week or two in advance but can be known further ahead when it is an obvious choice such as Hedgehunter in 2005 who had been a rather unlucky runner the year before when falling at the last still in contention.
If backing Ruby Walsh to ride the winner of the Grand National before his ride is announced you are probably going to get better Grand National odds than you would backing his mount on the day as many punters will look out for his rides and will want to make him their Grand National bet.
