French Bred Winner Odds

French bred horses have so far not managed to provide a winner of the Grand National since 1909 and each year there are several fancied horses that are French bred. Many people will be thinking ‘this is the year’ but so far that has not worked out.

Many people have dismissed French breds as horses with not enough stamina to win a Grand National. Between 1998 and 2007 there were six French breds that placed in the Grand National and French breds have also accounted for several winners and even more placed horses in the Welsh, Irish and Scottish Grand Nationals. This would suggest there is no shortage of stamina across the Channel.

French Breds have a fair record in the Grand National but they have simply failed to get their head in front in recent years. Six second or third placings in the race over the ten year period below would suggest it won't be too long before they start winning the Grand National again.

2008 French Bred Contenders

Butlers Cabin has already won the Irish Grand National and should the ground come up good then this French bred will hold a massive chance of getting a first French bred win since 1909.

L'Ami ran a decent race at the Cheltenham Festival but has yet to prove he stays the National trip as he finished pretty tired last year. Less weight on his back and another year to strengthen up might improve things but might not quite truly stay this trip.

Turko has a lot of weight to carry for a horse so young and even if his stamina does last out (never tried beyond 3m1/2f) it will probably be something else that stops him from playing a part in the finish.

Mon Mome stayed on strongly at the Cheltenham Festival having been tailed off and looks as thought he wants this sort of trip these days. Might struggle to win a race of this magnitude but certainly has place prospects.
