Win or Each Way odds on the Grand National?

Whether you back your horse to win the Grand National or each way is a difficult choice.

With an each way bet, half your stake goes on the win and half your stake on the place part of the bet.

The advantage of backing each way is that you will receive a pay out if your horse finishes 2nd,3rd or 4th.

If you back win only then all your money will go on the win and if you land the grand national odds you will win much more than if you had bet each way. But don’t be greedy! There are 40 grand national runners so getting one to finish in the first 4 would be a good result.

100/1 is the biggest winning price of a grand national runner. Four winners have been returned at those odds.

The shortest grand national odds for winners were 11/4 (Poethlyn in 1919), 3/1 (Huntsman in 1862) and 10/3 (Roquefort in 1885)

There have been four winning favourites (horses starting the race with the shortest grand national odds) in the last 29 races.

8 of the last 10 winners have been quoted at ante post grand national odds of between 25/1 and 40/1 at the start of February.

Grand National Odds Tips

If you are looking at the Grand National odds on the day of the race then you should be concentrating on horses at 33/1 or less, giving preference to those at 16/1 or less.

Those taking the odds on the grand national runners a few weeks before the race should be looking for runners between 25/1 and 40/1.
